Open Interest

The total number of open (unclosed) futures contracts. Its change reveals whether a move is backed by fresh money.

Open Interest (OI) counts positions still open. Price up + OI up = trend fueled by new buyers; price up + OI down = mere short covering, a more fragile move.

In depth

Open interest (OI) is the total number of futures contracts open and not yet closed on an instrument. Unlike volume (the number of contracts traded over a period), OI measures the commitment still at play: how many positions remain open at the session's end. It's a gauge of participation and conviction.

Cross-referenced with price, OI reveals a move's nature. Price up + OI up = fresh money entering long, a credible trend. Price up + OI down = shorts buying back (short covering), a move possibly running out of steam. It's a trend-quality filter, especially on futures and on horizons longer than pure intraday.

How to read it in practice

On futures, read OI alongside volume and order flow to judge a trend's strength: a push backed by rising OI is more likely to last than a move where OI contracts (unwinding). It's session-macro context, not tick-level timing.

Example

A rally with rising OI → new longs, a credible trend.

Common mistake

Using OI as a precise intraday entry signal. OI is published aggregated and delayed: it's a context and conviction indicator, not a tick trigger. It complements order flow, it doesn't replace it.

Frequently asked

Open interest vs volume: what's the difference?

Volume counts contracts traded over a period (activity). Open interest counts contracts still open at a moment (commitment). The same contract can generate volume without changing OI if it just passes from one hand to another.

Is rising OI bullish?

Not by itself: it depends on price. OI up with price up = new longs (bullish); OI up with price down = new shorts (bearish). The combination is what informs.

Is OI useful in day trading?

Mostly as context: it helps judge whether a trend is driven by fresh money or by unwinding. For fine intraday timing, order flow (heatmap, footprint, delta) remains the reference tool.
