An imbalance appears when aggressive volume on one side far exceeds the other at a price (often a 3-to-1 ratio). Stacked, imbalances trace zones of strength or weakness that price later respects.

An imbalance appears on the footprint when, between two adjacent price levels, aggressive volume on one side far outweighs the other, often at a 3-to-1 ratio. It signals clear, localized aggression: at that precise spot, one side took over forcefully, not weakly.
In isolation, imbalances are noise; stacked, they draw zones of strength. A cluster of buy imbalances leaves a demand footprint below price (potential support); a cluster of sell imbalances, a supply footprint above (resistance). Price often returns to react to these zones in later sessions.
On DeepCharts, let the footprint highlight imbalances and look for clusters rather than isolated cells. A buy-imbalance zone retested by price, with delta holding, confirms a tradable order flow support.

Imbalance vs absorption: are they the same?
No, they're opposite reads. The imbalance shows aggression that dominates (price moves its way); absorption shows aggression that's soaked up (price doesn't move despite volume).
What ratio defines an imbalance?
The classic threshold is 3-to-1: volume on one side is at least three times the opposite volume at the adjacent level. The ratio is adjustable by instrument and style.
Do imbalances work on all futures?
Yes, as long as the instrument is liquid enough for a readable footprint (NQ, ES, FDAX). On thinly traded contracts, imbalances are noisier.
