Spoofing
Fake large orders shown then pulled to mislead the market. Spottable when liquidity “vanishes” as soon as price gets close.
Spoofing means displaying large orders to give a false impression of supply or demand, then cancelling them before execution. On the heatmap, liquidity 'evaporates' as price approaches.
In depth
Spoofing means displaying large orders with no intention of executing them, to create a false impression of supply or demand and push others to react. As soon as price approaches, the spoofer cancels the orders. On the heatmap, this shows as liquidity that systematically 'evaporates' as price nears: a wall that only exists while untested.
Unlike the iceberg (a real, hidden order), a spoof is a fake order pulled before execution. It's an illegal manipulation on regulated markets, but still common and punished after the fact. For the trader, the point isn't moral: it's not to get trapped by a wall with no substance.
On DeepCharts, be wary of a big wall appearing abruptly, very visible, at a 'convenient' level. Watch its behavior as price approaches: a real wall defends and absorbs (volume trades against it); a spoof vanishes with no volume traded against it.
A huge sell wall disappears right before being hit → it was a spoof.
Taking a position trusting a large displayed wall ('there are 1,000 sell lots, I sell'). That's exactly the effect the spoofer wants. Wait to see whether the wall actually absorbs volume before giving it credit.
Frequently asked
How to tell a spoof from a real wall?
A real wall trades: volume hits it and it holds (absorption). A spoof disappears as price approaches with no volume executed against it. Behavior at execution decides.
Is spoofing illegal?
Yes, on regulated markets like futures, displaying orders with no intent to execute is a banned manipulation, sanctioned by regulators. It remains observable in practice nonetheless.
Spoofing vs stop run, what's the link?
They often combine: a spoof can push price toward a stop zone, then vanish at the moment of the sweep. Both exploit the predictable reactions of other participants.
