Volume Node (HVN / LVN)

A peak (HVN) or trough (LVN) of volume on the profile: HVNs attract price, LVNs get crossed fast.

A High Volume Node (HVN) is a heavily traded price: the market finds value there and returns. A Low Volume Node (LVN) is a rejected price: price crosses it quickly, making them good breakout or target levels.

In depth

Volume nodes are the relief of the volume profile. A HVN (High Volume Node) is a price where many contracts traded: a dense acceptance zone that acts as a magnet and tends to slow then hold price. An LVN (Low Volume Node) is an activity trough: a rejection zone price crosses fast, with no interest to linger.

This map of nodes structures moves: price tends to travel quickly from one HVN to the next, crossing LVNs in one go, then consolidate within HVNs. LVNs also make good invalidation levels: a return and acceptance into an LVN meant to reject signals the scenario has changed.

How to read it in practice

On DeepCharts, spot HVNs as targets and reaction zones, and LVNs as transit corridors. A break that enters an LVN has a good chance of moving fast to the next HVN: that's the logical place to set the target.

Example

Price accelerates through an LVN then slows as it reaches the next HVN.

Common mistake

Expecting a price reaction in the middle of an LVN. By definition, a volume gap offers neither support nor resistance: price crosses it. Look for reactions at the nodes (HVN), not in the gaps.

Frequently asked

HVN vs POC, what's the link?

The POC is the dominant HVN: the highest-volume node of the period. There can be several HVNs, but only one POC, the absolute peak.

Why does price accelerate in an LVN?

Because there are few orders and thus little counterparty to slow the move. The market never really accepted those prices: it crosses them quickly.

How to use nodes to set a target?

A move leaving a HVN and entering an LVN naturally aims for the next HVN, where activity (and thus potential reaction) resumes. It's a logical, volume-based target.
